4.7 Recognize that communication among cells is required for coordination of body functions. The nerves communicate with electrochemical signals, hormones circulate through the blood, and some cells produce signals to communicate only with nearby cells.
Vocabulary
Tier 3
Hormone - a chemical that sends a message through out the body in the blood
Cell Receptor - protein on the cell membrane that receives the hormone
Target cell - the cell that the hormone is meant to stimulate
Endocrine System
The Endocrine system is about glands and hormones. Hormones are molecules that tell cells to do different things, like having a menstrual cycle in females, or growing facial hair in adolescent males, or releasing Calcium
Other hormones include:
· HGH – human growth hormone · Testosterone – makes male characteristics
· Estrogen – makes female characteristics
· Insulin/glucagon – regulate sugar
· Adrenaline – gives us quick energy for an emergency
